In a setback for the state government, the Calcutta High Court has ruled in favor of the governor's authority in appointing vice-chancellors for 11 universities in West Bengal.
The government had challenged the appointments and halted the salary of the vice-chancellors, citing a legislative bill designating the Chief Minister as the chancellor. However, the court clarified that the bill had not received the governor's assent, affirming the governor's role as the chancellor and the validity of the appointments.
The court also emphasized that the vice-chancellors must be paid salaries as per regulations.
